Fishing Reports

11/13/15 - Welcome to the other side. With two weeks of the "off-season" past we are all settling in to the slightly more limited fishing options. But I think most of you who are still taking advantage of the fishing will agree, that the fishing has been nothing short of very good. The last few weeks of 50 to 60 degree weather has kept the Otter at a great temperature and it has given us anglers some really good opportunities. The fishing is much more like the beginning of October than it is like mid-November. There is no doubt that the winter will come, but for now we are happy that we are getting such great fishing. I will dive a bit more into to this in a moment, but first I wanted to take a moment to THANK everybody who has been involved with our shop and/or guide service this year. It's a real pleasure to be able to share this experience with all of you. Thank you for supporting the shop, reading the reports and using our guide service. We are very appreciative. We are very lucky in Vermont to have a budding fly fishing culture, with so many great people and contributors. Thanks for a memorable year, here is to many more.
I don't think I remember a November that has been this mild. having our water levels at such and ideal spot as well as keeping the water temps up, has been a great mixture for keeping the fish active. Typically the water temps are lower and many of the browns are coming of the spawn. It can make fishing challenging. That just isn't the case this year. Looking at the forecast, it looks to continue in this trend. With the temps staying warm, the bug activity has still be present. We are still seeing Caddis, Baetis and Midge hatching here and there, though the numbers are certainly getting sparse. While I have been getting action on nymph imitations of all of these patterns, the prince still seems to be the top choice for the fish. Streamer fishing on the Otter has been good as well. Keep the flies moving slower, now that we are getting later in the season.
There are options for migratory fish as well. Locally a few of the lake Champlain tributaries have developed runs of LL Salmon. Reports are saying that this fall is yet another record year for fish returns, especially out at the Grand Isle Hatchery. We have been hearing of fish in the Winooski and Lamoille. I personally haven't heard much about the lake run Rainbows yet. I know that there has been some pressure for those fish, but I still haven't heard of a confirmed catch. Several people are traveling to the Lake Ontario and Erie tribs of opportunities at Steelhead. This is a good time of the year to do that, as the crowds of Salmon anglers are starting to thin.
If there isn't going to be snow on the ground, then the fishing might as well be good. I hope that you all find some time to get out and get some fishing in the coming weeks while its still warm out. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Detailed Reports

Otter Creek - May 02

Water Temperature: 45
Water Clarity: Off, but clearing
Hatches: Caddis, Hendricksons, midge
Suggested Patterns: Girdle Bug #6-10, BH Stonefly #6-10, DB Speckled Stone #4-8, Copperback Stones #6-10, Princes #10-14, Psycho Prince Yellow #10-12, BH Soft Hackle #10-12, Hare's Ear #12-14, Bird of Prey #14-16, Gut Instinct #14-16, Sparkle Pupa #14, San Juans, Sucker Spawn #12
Commentary:

The Otter is still quite high, around 2300 cfs. But given the recent trend of weather and water dropping, we may just be able to start putting sometime in on it soon. Some already have. The clarity on the Otter has improved dramatically and it is more than fishable with artificials, not considering the level. I prefer the Otter to be at least around 1500 before I start putting sometime in on it, but that is still a very challenging flow. If your planning on getting out on the Otter, be careful, its pushing! But you can pick the pockets and edges and you may find some fish. They tend to get out of the way of the heavy current in the spring, though some of the larger fish will stick it out in the deeper water in the middle, where they can find some resting areas. Use bigger and heavier flies.

Middlebury River - May 01

Water Temperature: 45-47
Water Clarity: Clear
Hatches: Brown Stones, Caddis, Midge (Hendys soon)
Suggested Patterns: Girdle Bug #6-10, BH Stonefly #6-10, DB Speckled Stone #4-8, Copperback Stones #6-10, Princes #10-14, Psycho Prince Yellow #10-12, BH Soft Hackle #10-12, Hare's Ear #12-14, Bird of Prey #14-16, Gut Instinct #14-16, Sparkle Pupa #14, San Juans, Sucker Spawn #12
Commentary:

The Midd has fished decent over the last week. I took some fish in the pocket water in East Midd for the first time this weekend. Lots of Suckers in the deep water.

Lake Champlain Tributaries - May 01

Water Temperature: 46-50
Water Clarity: Varied
Hatches: Caddis, Brown Stones, Midge
Suggested Patterns: Princes #10-14, Stoneflies #6-10, Caddis #8-12, Sucker Spawn, Eggs, Juans, Streamers (white)
Commentary:

Reports from the lake tribs may be the best I have ever heard. The consistency in which people are catching these fish, is considerably better than it was, say 5 years ago. This is probably one of VT F&W's recent successes. The crowds have been up on the weekends though some week days have had some room to roam. These fish will probably only be in a few more weeks before they drop back into the lake before the Bass take over. This beauty was caught by local tying and angling guru, Jon Brooks.

New Haven River - May 01

Water Temperature: 48-50
Water Clarity: Clear
Hatches: Hendricksons, Caddis, Brown Stones, & Midge
Suggested Patterns: Girdle Bug #6-10, BH Stonefly #6-10, DB Speckled Stone #4-8, Copperback Stones #6-10, Princes #10-14, Psycho Prince Yellow #10-12, BH Soft Hackle #10-12, Hare's Ear #12-14, Bird of Prey #14-16, Gut Instinct #14-16, Sparkle Pupa #14, San Juans, Sucker Spawn #12
Commentary:

Things are starting to warm up a bit on the NH. The lower part of the river is still fishing better, with the warmest water temps. The fish should become more active up higher soon. We will begin to see some more bug activity. You can expect Hendrickson duns to start with some regularity soon in the afternoon. Work the deeper water when you can.

New Haven River - Apr 21

Water Temperature: 44
Water Clarity: OFF
Hatches: Brown Stones and Midge
Suggested Patterns: Pat's Rubber Legs #6-10, BH Stonefly #6-10, DB Speckled Stone #4-8, Copperback Stones #6-10, Montana Princes #10-14, Psycho Prince Yellow #10-12, BH Soft Hackle #10-12, Caddis Larva #10, Copper John #12-14, San Juans, Eggs, Streamers
Commentary:

The NH is on the way up and with the way the rain is coming down I have a feeling we are going to be waiting a day or two before it gets back into decent shape. It's all part of the Spring cycle. Based on the fishing prior to the precipitation we should be looking at things picking up soon. For now be careful out there and stick with the bigger bugs in the muddy water.
