Fishing Reports

11/13/15 - Welcome to the other side. With two weeks of the "off-season" past we are all settling in to the slightly more limited fishing options. But I think most of you who are still taking advantage of the fishing will agree, that the fishing has been nothing short of very good. The last few weeks of 50 to 60 degree weather has kept the Otter at a great temperature and it has given us anglers some really good opportunities. The fishing is much more like the beginning of October than it is like mid-November. There is no doubt that the winter will come, but for now we are happy that we are getting such great fishing. I will dive a bit more into to this in a moment, but first I wanted to take a moment to THANK everybody who has been involved with our shop and/or guide service this year. It's a real pleasure to be able to share this experience with all of you. Thank you for supporting the shop, reading the reports and using our guide service. We are very appreciative. We are very lucky in Vermont to have a budding fly fishing culture, with so many great people and contributors. Thanks for a memorable year, here is to many more.
I don't think I remember a November that has been this mild. having our water levels at such and ideal spot as well as keeping the water temps up, has been a great mixture for keeping the fish active. Typically the water temps are lower and many of the browns are coming of the spawn. It can make fishing challenging. That just isn't the case this year. Looking at the forecast, it looks to continue in this trend. With the temps staying warm, the bug activity has still be present. We are still seeing Caddis, Baetis and Midge hatching here and there, though the numbers are certainly getting sparse. While I have been getting action on nymph imitations of all of these patterns, the prince still seems to be the top choice for the fish. Streamer fishing on the Otter has been good as well. Keep the flies moving slower, now that we are getting later in the season.
There are options for migratory fish as well. Locally a few of the lake Champlain tributaries have developed runs of LL Salmon. Reports are saying that this fall is yet another record year for fish returns, especially out at the Grand Isle Hatchery. We have been hearing of fish in the Winooski and Lamoille. I personally haven't heard much about the lake run Rainbows yet. I know that there has been some pressure for those fish, but I still haven't heard of a confirmed catch. Several people are traveling to the Lake Ontario and Erie tribs of opportunities at Steelhead. This is a good time of the year to do that, as the crowds of Salmon anglers are starting to thin.
If there isn't going to be snow on the ground, then the fishing might as well be good. I hope that you all find some time to get out and get some fishing in the coming weeks while its still warm out. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Commentary:

Same situation as the New Haven here, though the Middlebury, Neshobe and Furnace will clear up quicker than the NH. It's hard to make much of report about a river that is blown out today, but that should change within 24-48 hours. The state stocked the Middlebury last week, so there are some fish present, and plenty when the levels come down. We have seen some decent bug activity on the Middlebury. Expect the Hendrickson spinner fall in the evening and when the water clears you should have a chance at fishing dries to risers.

Otter Creek - May 12

Water Temperature: 58-66
Water Clarity: OFF
Hatches: Hendrickson, Blue Quills, Caddis, Midge
Suggested Patterns: NYMPHS: Girdle Bug #6-10, BH Stonefly #6-10, DB Speckled Stone #4-8, Copperback Stones #6-10, Princes #10-14, Psycho Prince Yellow #10-12, BH Soft Hackle #10-12, Hare's Ear #12-14, Bird of Prey #14-16, Gut Instinct #14-16, Sparkle Pupa #14-16,Wired Caddis Pupa #14-16 San Juans, Sucker Spawn #12
DRIES: Hendricksons #12-14, Para Adams #12-14, Red Quill #14-16, Quill Gordon #14, Elk Hair Caddis #14-16, Spotlight Caddis #14-16... more
Commentary:

The Otter is muddy and on the way up still here in Middlebury. The Otter will take a few days to clear but the level will remain a bit higher than it was before the rain. Which in the long run is a good thing, but not for fishing the Otter in the next few days. The Otter is a long system and can offer you some fishing options further to the south. This picture was taken south of Rutland on the Otter. the Pike are starting to wake up on the Otter as well. We picked off several from the boat and grabbed a nice smallie too. Prior to the rain the otter in Middlebury was in fantastic shape, which it will return too. I fished on Friday mornings to a swarm of Hendricksons. All adult forms including Duns, maters, and Spinners were present.

Lake Champlain Tributaries - May 05

Water Temperature: 54-60
Water Clarity: Clear
Hatches: Caddis
Suggested Patterns: Princes #10-14, Stoneflies #6-10, Caddis #8-12, Sucker Spawn, Eggs, Juans, Streamers (white and black)
Commentary:

The Lake Champlain Tribs are still fishing well for the Rainbows. There has also been some good Caddis activity as well. We can expect the Bass to start pushing in and a slow migration of rainbows back to the Lake. However, I have continued to catch some good Rainbows well into May and Bass season. Natural imitations and some wilder fly patterns have worked. Chartreuse anything is a good imitation of the Grannom Caddis. Streamers have been taking fish as well, but the worm and eggs continues to catch fish. Stremers are a great choice for the Bass as well. Buggers are a favorite because they make a good crawfishimitatino. We like Olive, Black, and our Orange Black combo here at the shop for the Bass. I usually use a double strea, mer rig with a small streamer being chased by a larger one. I use a grizzly matuka, hornburg ior small bugger for the small one. Large Stonefly nymphs as Hellgrammites.

Middlebury River - May 05

Water Temperature: 52-58
Water Clarity: Clear
Hatches: Hendricksons, Brown Stones, Caddis, Midge
Suggested Patterns: NYMPHS: Girdle Bug #6-10, BH Stonefly #6-10, DB Speckled Stone #4-8, Copperback Stones #6-10, Princes #10-14, Psycho Prince Yellow #10-12, BH Soft Hackle #10-12, Hare's Ear #12-14, Bird of Prey #14-16, Gut Instinct #14-16, Sparkle Pupa #14-16,Wired Caddis Pupa #14-16 San Juans, Sucker Spawn #12
DRIES: Hendricksons #12-14, Para Adams #12-14, Red Quill #14-16, Quill Gordon #14, Elk Hair Caddis #14-16, Spotlight Caddis #14-16... more
Commentary:

The Midd is running a touch low on the lower section, which makes for spookier fish. This may transition fish into the riffle water. The stretch in the East Middlebury Village has turned a few fish from the pocket water but the levels are a bit more challenging to fish. This area should improve dramatically over the next week or so. No word on the Brook Trout stretches yet, but I would give them a week or two and take advantage of the lower stuff. still some suckers on the spawn.

New Haven River - May 05

Water Temperature: 52-60
Water Clarity: Clear
Hatches: Hendricksons, Brown Stones, Caddis, Midge
Suggested Patterns: NYMPHS: Girdle Bug #6-10, BH Stonefly #6-10, DB Speckled Stone #4-8, Copperback Stones #6-10, Princes #10-14, Psycho Prince Yellow #10-12, BH Soft Hackle #10-12, Hare's Ear #12-14, Bird of Prey #14-16, Gut Instinct #14-16, Sparkle Pupa #14-16,Wired Caddis Pupa #14-16 San Juans, Sucker Spawn #12
DRIES: Hendricksons #12-14, Para Adams #12-14, Red Quill #14-16, Quill Gordon #14, Elk Hair Caddis #14-16, Spotlight Caddis #14-16... more
Commentary:

The New Haven has begun to fish a bit better. the lower stretches still being the primary focus. The Dog Team property has turned a few nice fish, including this Rainbow in the photo from a recent guide trip. This area will also boast some decent hatches in the coming days and weeks.
