The Middlebury is in great shape. It was actually a nice thing to get those pushes of water through the system with the cold nights. the middlebury is prime for a decent run into July of decent water temps. The shorter system is more resilient to warm temps, but not hot weather. the gorge acts as a refrigerator for the lower river. usually the areas below Rte 7 will get too hot under the July sun, but we may get a week of ok temps down there. The streamside vegetation has grown enough in that region that terrestrial fishing has already started there. The pockets up in East Middlebury and into Ripton should be fishing very well in the coming days and if we can keep our nights in the mid-60's hopefully for the foreseeable future. Though the bugs have not been heavy, the hatches and mating activity has been modest in the evenings. Typically earlier on the cooler days and at dusk on the warmer days. Dry flies, dry-dropper and nymphing will be some of the best choices as the water gets lower. If targeting the fish on the lower Midd in the coming days, morning, evening and overcast days will offer you more protection to approach the longer runs and placid pools. Those wild fish can be tricky when it gets low. For now, it's pretty good.
